Making pour over coffee can seem like a daunting task. After all, there are individuals who dedicate years of their lives to perfecting the techniques and the right pouring patterns, ratios, and engulfing themselves in the smallest of details to achieve maximum flavor with their favorite coffee. The truth is, with the following three easy tips, your pour over brewing can level up from pretty good to *chef’s kiss*.
One of the easiest and cheapest ways to make better pour over coffee is to use a scale. It will help you remain consistent with your pouring method and allow you to dial in a recipe or ratio that you like and fits your own personal style. The best part? Gram scales can be as cheap or expensive as you want! If you’re just starting out and want the best “bang-for-your-buck” scale, Amazon has some super cheap ones. Personally, I use a cheap Amazon scale at home for my coffee and it works wonders.
Some fancier scales (like the Acaia Pearl and the new Fellow Tally) have programmed brewing guides that help you along the way while you brew so you always have the same ratio and follow the recipe on the display. These features are totally optional and you aren’t required to use it, but it can be handy to have if you’ve never tried it before or if you are new to specialty coffee brewing.
This step may seem weird, but trust me, it’s totally worth it. Gooseneck kettles like the Stagg EKG from our friends at Fellow or the Artisan Electric Kettle from Brewista are fantastic at providing control and consistency when making a pour over. Pour overs can require precision and detail, especially if you’re practicing different pouring techniques and recipes. A gooseneck kettle will help you dial in your favorite brew by allowing you to pinpoint where the water goes and how much of it you pour.
This step should come as no surprise coming from us. Coffee is 98% water! Using better water is a sure fire way to help you make better coffee. In the same way a scale and kettle can help you brew more consistently, that is where Third Wave Water excels. Using the same mineral profile for your coffee will ensure you are able to remove an ever-changing variable and focus on the specifics of your coffee rather than worry about the water.
Coffee requires certain concentrations of certain minerals in order to extract all of the goodness during the brewing process. We have followed the Specialty Coffee Association’s guidelines for coffee brewing water and made the Classic Profile fit within those guidelines to help you brew the best coffee you can.
By using these 3 tools, your pour over brewing will finally level up from pretty good to *chef’s kiss*. A scale ensures consistency and allows you to find your preferred recipe. A gooseneck kettle provides control and precision, enabling precise pouring techniques. And by using Third Wave Water, you eliminate the variability of water composition and focus on the unique qualities of your coffee. Together, these tools enhance the pour over experience, unlocking the full potential of your brew. Embrace these tools, experiment, and enjoy the journey of crafting exceptional pour over coffee. Cheers to perfecting your cup, one pour at a time!
